Speed Ladder: Agility Ladders
Hey, Just What Are
Speed Ladders?
Speed ladders, also called agility ladders, are pieces of athletic equipment to help you train to move your feet faster. Imagine a ladder lying flat on the ground, typically made of flat rope (so you don’t trip and injure yourself). Then you go through various repetitions using your feet and the speed ladder.
You do all kinds of speed ladder exercises, like the feared bunny hop, or the hop scotch drill you did as a child. Of course, there are more advanced drills such as the Tango/Mumbo drill, but they all do one thing – they get you to move your feet. It is this repetition by using a speed ladder that increases your speed, helps you jump higher and makes you quicker.
Muscle Memory and Foot Speed Using an Agility Ladder
Muscle memory is frequently referred to as motor learning. Essentially, when you do something over and over and over, your body remembers this as “procedural” memory. Think about playing a piano, or a guitar, or shooting free throws, or even knitting or needlepoint. These are the same physical steps practiced until you get it right.
Muscle memory is learning a physical motor task into memory through repetition – lots of it.
This is where speed ladders come in. Your feet learn to move faster. Whether you are a volleyball setter, a football quarterback, a basketball point guard, a baseball shortstop or just about any other position in an athletic event, you can improve your foot speed and become quicker, faster, stronger.
